For the past year, the indefatigable Tatyana Brown has been on a Mission: To create a poetry anthology combining the voices of the best touring poets in the country with the best homegrown San Francisco Bay talent. The result is Tandem, the newest Bay Area poetry journal and the take-home version of San Francisco’s Lit Slam.
Like the show it accompanies, Tandem is a work reflecting the taste and voices of San Francisco. Tandem is, so far as we know, the only poetry anthology with a crowd-sourced editorial board. Our slush pile is a lively bunch; poets submit unsolicited poems to us by performing them successfully on stage at our monthly poetry show. Each poem is judged by a panel of editors selected at random from the audience. Verbal “manuscripts” are reviewed and commented upon in real time, and the audience is encouraged to influence our editors by varying the intensity of its applause. The result is a living, breathing book that represents the tastes and preferences of those who helped build our community show by show.
Tandem is… the only poetry anthology with a crowd-sourced editorial board.
We’re thrilled by how many national spoken word luminaries have expressed support for our show and our anthology by submitting poems on our stage: some as open competitors, some as featured performers. The list of talent enclosed in the pages of Tandem ranges from impressive to downright jaw-dropping. We’ll be previewing the table of contents in the coming days, but you can get a pretty good hint of what’s coming by looking at our past shows on our Facebook Page.
Tandem comes out on Monday, November 19, at 8:30PM during our monthly show at 21st and Valencia Streets, San Francisco. Please come celebrate with us.
